Refining Data

A takeoff isn't finished when the agent stops running. Where it applied a default, or the design has moved on, you change it — the agent does the measuring, you supply the judgment.

How it works

Every value is either measured from your documents or filled in from a smart default. Defaults are visible and changeable: refining means replacing an assumption with something more specific as you learn it. Open Details on an assembly to see which is which — see Bill of Materials.

Changes go through the agent. It previews every one and waits for your approval, so you see the effect before committing, then propagates it across the project.

Note: Changes are scoped to the version you're working in. To test an option without touching your current numbers, copy the version first. See Project Versions.

Example use cases

Adjust an assumption

Replace a default when the structural notes, the spec, or your own judgment says otherwise.

  • Change the rebar percentage on the slabs to 1.5%.
  • Set the insulation thickness on exterior walls to 4 inches.
  • Use 5,000 psi for the foundation concrete.
Asking the agent to change a design assumption

Swap a product

Replace the material assigned to a layer — a manufacturer's mix instead of a regional average, or a different product entirely. To keep the product but improve the carbon data behind it, update its EPD the same way.

  • Swap the concrete for a mix with higher SCM content.
  • Use this manufacturer's curtain wall instead of the default.
  • Update the EPD for this product to the manufacturer's latest.

Get a recommendation

The agent works from your project's specs and location, so recommendations fit your actual constraints.

  • What lower-carbon alternatives are there for this cladding?
  • Recommend a concrete mix that hits the same strength with less cement.
  • Is there a product-specific EPD available for this assembly?
